Title: “The Role of Women’s Leadership: Exploring the Impact of Women in Top Positions on their Subordinates’ Salary."

Abstract: This thesis aims to contribute to the literature on women in leadership positions and their effects on subordinates’ wages. Utilizing data from the Sixth European Working Conditions Survey, descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between employees’ gender, boss’ gender, and wages in some European countries. The findings reveal that countries with higher average wages tend to exhibit wider gender wage gaps. Women with a woman boss experience the greatest disadvantage in terms of wages, while subordinate men tend to have higher wages regardless of the boss’s gender. The inferential analysis shows a large negative effect of gender on women’s salaries and a worsening effect for employees with a woman boss. However, an interaction between gender and the gender of the boss suggests a reduced gender penalty for women subordinates with a woman boss, indicating a partial rejection of both the hypotheses that see women managers as agents of change and as cogs in the machine. The study highlights the need for further investigations to determine the direct influence of bosses on employee wages and to assess the specific impact of women bosses on subordinates. These findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on women in leadership and raise questions for future research.

Title: “Rape culture and patriarchy in Italian culture. An attempt at intervention”. (Original title: “Rape culture e Patriarcato nella cultura italiana. Un tentativo di intervento”).

Abstract: The aim of my theis is to analyse contemporary societies, with particular attention to the Italian one, as it is characterised by the culture known in gender studies as “rape culture”, one of the domination devices implemented by the patriarchal system. To this end, the leitmotif of the entire paper will be the attention paid to feminist activism from the male gender, as it too is a victim of patriarchy, but above all an ally. First of all, I will delve into the subject matter under study and the ways in which rape culture and patriarchy survive and strengthen over time. To do so, I will observe “rape” as a socio-historical phenomenon and its proximity to power. I will then demonstrate the “symbolic violence” essence of rape culture and investigate the motivations that lead women to "accept" male domination. Secondly, I will focus on the manifestations of rape culture and patriarchy in everyday life. Thus, how the latter are not only the cause of sexual violence, but also as culture and, above all, language reinforce the grip of patriarchy in the world. For this reason, I will point out the need to adopt terminologies and concepts in everyday speech in order to condemn all forms of violence. Finally, I will compare liberal and radical feminisms approaches together with some current realities, in particular the “Unione Donne in Italia” of Bologna where I did a period of internship. I will conclude, therefore, by suggesting five key points to mark the path to take from now on.
